The area and amenities
The province of Relleu covers an expanse of over 75 sq miles. The village itself it set within a large mountain valley like a hidden gem. It is a typical Spanish village yet only 25 minutes from the coast where you will find all the shops and businesses you could ever need. It currently has around 950 inhabitants, and is increasing all the time. Relleu is the perfect example of rural tourism, it has mountain climbing, cycling, walking and horse riding, all this with an average of over 300 days of sun per year. The mountain of Sierra de Aitana standing at 1558m and Puig Campana standing at 1442m overlooks the whole area and can be seen from nearly every point.

The area is mountainous and there are olive and almond trees covering the land, which creates the most beautiful scenery. The sunrises and sunsets are magnificent and these spectacular views become part of your everyday living.

Our village has 3 small convenience shops to buy your everyday groceries, a tobacconist, 2 bakers, 2 butchers and a fishmonger. We have a village co-operative store that sells local organic produce grown by the villagers. The prices are cheap and the quality is fabulous.

We have 6 bars and restaurants, along with an Internet cafe and more venues planned to open over the next year. There is a sports arena with football facilities, a new pilota court, a municipal swimming pool plus a planned bar and restaurant, all owned by the town hall and available for use by the whole community.

Fiestas
We have 2 main fiestas lasting 5 days each, the first in August named Saint Albert and the second at the end of September named Marie de deu. However, there are various one-day fiestas throughout the year that are truly fantastic and an eye opener for any fair minded brit!

During Fiestas the day usually kicks of at 8am with firecrackers and musicians playing up and down the village roads. The entire village is then invited for fresh sardines cooked on the bbq and the following day for a giant paella. There is music, food, wine, fireworks, religious processions and games for the children, all carrying on until the early hours. There really is something for everyone and it is a full five day event where socializing is taken very seriously. Be prepared though, as you normally need a couple of days of rest afterwards just to recover!

See diary of events for the next celebration.

A Little Bit of History
The name Relleu means “Relief”. It was given this name as it was a well earned stop off for troops and horses alike. The history of the area is linked with the ancient Moorish world that worked the land in these parts until their expulsion in 1609.

The village is overlooked by the castle ruins, which at night are lit up and can be seen for miles. The castle was built in the 11 th century and was an important part in occupying Moorish front line. The village itself has existed as long as the castle and we now have a museum located in an impressive town house show casing all the finds from an archeology dig.

The church of Saint Jaimie Apostol was erected in the 17 th century and was built on the ancient village cemetery. The church is situated within the village square and her beautiful bells are the oldest in the province.

The town hall has now reformed the old washhouse that was used by the villagers for years. It is now open everyday for tourists and locals alike and a very interesting insight into times gone by.
